This is a question I get a lot, so I figured I would share with you all. I, Curly Demure, DO NOT, I repeat, do not cover my hair at night nor do I use a satin pillow case. Yep! I said it! Blaspheme, right?! LOL. I have reasons, and these are them:
- If I cover my twists, the product neverrrrr dries in my hair, even when I do my twists on dry hair.
- My hair always looks "smooshed", and I can never round it out correctly.
- My hair is very healthy, so I don't worry about it snagging on my cotton pillowcase.
- Cotton absorbs moisture, so if I go to bed with damp hair I am more likely to have my hair dry in the morning.
With that being said, I use water-based products in my hair, so if I use an excess amount, it is absorbed to the right balance for my hair.
OK, so with every positive there is a negative, and as y'all know, I keep it real, so the negative is:
- I have to wash my pillowcase 3x a week to avoid breakouts And that, to me, isn't so negative-- being a mother of a 3 year old, I do a lot of laundry anyway! LOL.
Are silk/satin bonnets, scarves, or pillowcases necessary for your hair?
Tell me in a comment below.

The silk bonnet I use at night is very necessary for my hair. I do sleep without the bonnet the night before a wash day, but my hair is always extremely dry when I wake up in the morning so I know if I want to retain moisture in my hair, I need the bonnet.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The few times I've slept without a bonnet, all of the moisture was sucked out of my hair-- not a good look. I haven't tried sleeping with my hair out on silk pillowcases, and I'm not really interested at this point because I like how scarves/bonnets preserve my styles.
DeleteI don't cover me hair either.
ReplyDeleteIt's VERY healthy and stay very well moisturized.
And I actually think it looks waaaaay better without covering it.
You're one of the lucky ones, lol.
DeleteThanks for commenting!
I just ordered a satin pillowcase for times when I have big style that I don't want to squish into my bonnet. Every once in a while I'll sleep with my hair uncovered but I like to keep thins in place.
ReplyDeleteSame here!
DeleteGirl, I don't see how you do it lol
ReplyDeleteEspecially with having dreads, I need to sleep on a satin pillowcase. Anything else leaves all kinds of lint and random clumps behind.
I don't do the bonnet, though. It's too darn hot and they don't stay on anymore. I freeform so, fortunately, I don't have to worry about smooshed hair.
When I first went natural at the age of 13 I never wore a satin bonnet it wasn't until about 2009-10 that I began wearing a bonnet. For me; my hair thrives on the moisture and let's me know that it is not pleased that I sleep with out it. I still don't do pillowcases or scarves though.
